A directory searching apparatus in a mobile communication terminal and a method thereof are provided to search the directory by inputting a representative consonant capable of being inputted through once key, thereby quickly searching the directory since desired name information can be searched without inputting keys for adding strokes for consonants and accordingly increasing the efficiency of the directory searching process. A directory searching apparatus in a mobile communication terminal comprises the followings: a key input unit(204) which generates a key signal corresponding to an inputted key; a memory(208) which stores a directory table comprising direction information of two or more items including names and stores a consonant table including one or more representative consonant rows on which representative consonants and one or more similar consonants having shapes similar to the representative consonants are respectively mapped; and a controller(200) which searches the directory table through the representative consonant when the representative consonant for directory search is inputted, and searches the directory table by using the representative consonant row when a name is not searched through the representative consonant.
