An apparatus and a method for editing background images in a video communication terminal, and a personalized background image changing service system using the same are provided to perform user authentication for an originating call and an incoming call, to compose a background image corresponding to the authenticated user and a personal image of an actual user, and to transmit the composed image to a terminal of the other party, thereby protecting user's privacy when a user originates/receives a call by using the video communication terminal. A data input unit(106) receives authentication information about a user, and inputs/outputs a series of data for a call. A user authentication unit(101) performs user authentication for an originating call and an incoming call. An image extracting unit(102) extracts personal information in a user's image photographed through a camera. A memory device stores information for the user authentication and information for providing background image contents according to different individuals. An image management unit(104) extracts background image contents, which a user previously registers, from the memory device. A video/voice communication unit composes the background image contents extracted from the image management unit(104) and the personal information and transmits the composed information to a video communication terminal party of the other party.
