A mobile terminal for supporting a TTY(Teletypewriter) device for the hearing impaired or a person with a speech disorder and its communication method are provided to effectively support a TTY function by establishing the environment of a reception side according to the TTY mode information of a transmission side. A controller(18) enables a vocoder(12) by a TTY mode selected by a user. The vocoder(12) encodes a board tone received from a TTY device(8,9) into a voice data packet based on the selected TTY mode. A TTY mode processing unit(20) includes the selected TTY mode information selected by the user in a portion of the voice data packet. An RF transmission unit(10) transmits the encoded voice data packet including the TTY mode information.
