A method for detecting a transmission symbol in a receiver of a V-BLAST(Vertical-Bell Laboratory Layered Space-Time) system is provided to efficiently combine a conventional maximum likelihood detection scheme with a DF(Decision Feedback) detection scheme in the receiver of the V-BLAST system using plural transmission antennas and reception antennas. A method for detecting a transmission symbol in a receiver of a V-BLAST system comprises the following several steps. QR factorization is performed for a channel matrix, and a reception signal vector matrix is calculated by multiplying a reception signal vector(y) and Q^H. p number of transmission symbols are selected as candidate symbols in the calculated reception signal vector matrix. According to a detection order, interference is eliminated by using all the possible an M^p-tuple which the candidate symbols can have. n-tuple are obtained by applying the DF detection scheme to (n-p) number of remaining transmission symbols M^p times. A transmission symbol vector is detected by applying the maximum likelihood detection scheme to all the symbols on basis of the n-tuple calculated via the DF detection scheme.
