Selection markers for improving backfat trait in pig by using candidate genes and a method for improving the backfat trait in pig by using the same selection markers are provided to enhance accuracy and efficiency of selection and promote genetic improvement of backfat trait in pigs by using genotype combinations of two candidate genes as the selection markers. The selection marker for improving pig traits is a combination of PCR-RFLP(polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism) haplotypes of MC4R(melanocortin 4 receptor) and HMG(high mobililty group), wherein the PCR-RFLP haplotypes for improving backfat thickness trait of pigs are haplotypes NNmm; and the PCR-RFLP haplotypes for improving intramuscular fat content(IMF) trait of pigs is the haplotype mm. An equation for selecting the paternal line of pigs is I1*=daily weight increase + backfat thickness + feed demand ratio + MC4R(mm) + HMG1(NN). An equation for selecting the maternal line of pigs is I2*=daily weight increase + backfat thickness + feed demand ratio + litter size + number of weaning pig + MC4R(mm) + HMG1(NN).
