The device for reducing the swirling up of loose objects from the track (1.10) during passage of a train has aerodynamic guiding elements and/or linings of steel, plastic or composite materials which are flush with the contours of the carriage body underside (1.1) and are attached in a fixed or movable manner to the carriage body underside. The rigidly attached air guiding elements and linings may terminate the carriage crossover flush with the carriage contours and are vertically offset. An independent claim is included for a method for evaluating the susceptibility of a train's geometry to swirling up of ballast stones and for evaluating the susceptibility to damage by flying ballast.
