An apparatus and a method for multimedia data transmission and reception in a cable network using a broadband and physical layer frame structure are provided to adopt a newly developed technique later easily and perform a unified service of a communication and a broadcasting while supplying a backward compatibility. In an apparatus for multimedia data transmission in a cable network using a broadband and physical layer frame structure, an external network matching unit(305) transmits an external network and input/output data to a DOCSIS(Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) MAC level. A DOCSIS MAC processing unit(306) transmits the data outputted from the external network matching unit(305) to a specific destination. A first downward physical layer processing unit(307) processes an existing specification transmission among the data outputted from the DOCSIS MAC processing unit(306). A second downward physical layer processing unit(308) processes a new broadband transmission among the data outputted from the DOCSIS MAC processing member(306). An upward physical layer processing member(309) transmits the received data to the DOCSIS MAC processing member(306).
