PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide magnesium oxide powder having a low impurity content, easily treatable, having excellent operability, and usable as the raw material for forming the protective film of a dielectric layer in a color plasma display panel, and to provide a method for producing the same. PSOLUTION: The magnesium oxide powder comprises the primary particle of crystal magnesium oxide and the secondary grain obtained by aggregation of a plurality of the primary grains. The average particle diameter of the powder is 0.5 to 10 m, and the BET specific surface area is 0.1 to 3 mSP2/SP/g.
