A method for balancing and sharing resources in an optical transmission network is provided to increase the efficiency of resource sharing by balancing unbalanced resource sharing and to improve the efficiency of links by balancing the maximum link load. An upper SRLG(Shared Risk Link Group) maintains information on the number of current connections in an optical transmission network(501). Also the upper SRLG maintains the link list of currently extracted working paths(502). The upper SRLG divides the whole network topology into a plurality of sub-domains, and extracts a sub-domain for a backup path(503). In order to prepare for the case that a backup path doesn't exist in the extracted sub-domain, the upper SRLG extracts and stores the rest sub-domains(504). The upper SRLG applies the backup path setup algorithm of a lower SRLG and extracts a backup path(505). In case the backup path setup algorithm is successfully applied(506), the SRLG verifies the validity of links(507).
