A method and an apparatus for handling an exceptional case in an interactive speech interface system are provided to naturally solve the exceptional case by handling the exceptional case by using a previously constructed database, exceptional case handling information and rules to achieve the target of the system. A plurality of databases used to handle exceptional cases is constructed. Exceptional case handling information and rules are created and stored in the plurality of databases. When a user speaks an expression corresponding to an exceptional case, the exceptional case is handled using the exceptional case handling information and the rules.
