An apparatus for detecting an abnormality of a gear train and a method for detecting an abnormality of a gear train are provided to find the abnormality of the gear train at an early stage. An apparatus for detecting an abnormality of a gear train includes a load detection sensor(20), a memory(60), a display section(70), and a control section(50). The load detection sensor is provided in one of a plurality of gears(12) included in a gear train(10) driven by an engine(80) to detect the load applied to the gear. A reference load of the gear is stored in the memory. The display section displays information on the load. The control section compares the load detected by the load detection sensor with the reference load and outputs the comparison result to the display section.
