Provided are a thermal barrier coating composition, which reacts with molten sand to form a sealing layer within a thermal barrier coating layer and withstands molten sand infiltration, and a method for coating an article with the composition. The method for coating an article comprises the steps of: (1) forming a ceramic-based compound layer on an article; (2) providing a solution containing 25-50vol%, based on the solution, of metal fine particles having a diameter of about 10-1000nm; (3) bringing the ceramic-based compound layer into contact with the solution; (4) drying the article; and (5) optionally repeating the steps (3) and (4).
