A method and an apparatus for driving an OCB(Optically Compensated Birefringence) LCD device are provided to reduce a transition time for the LCD device by applying transition voltages with different polarities on adjacent pixels. An apparatus(700) for driving an OCB(Optically Compensated Birefringence) LCD device includes a timing controller(710), a data driver(720), a scan driver(730), a common driver(740), a grayscale voltage generator(750), an optical source controller(760) and a capacitor driver(770). The timing controller receives grayscale data signals(R,G,B,DATA), a horizontal synchronous signal, and a vertical synchronous signal from a graphic controller, and generates grayscale data corresponding to an image signal, a data driving signal, a scan driving signal, a common driving signal, an optical source control signal, and a capacitor control signal. The data driver applies a data transition voltage to the data lines. The scan driver applies a scan transition voltage to the scan lines. The common driver applies a common transition voltage to the common lines.
