A resource reservation system in a wireless network and a method thereof are provided to prevent a waste of resources in handoff by modifying a refresh interval when handoff occurs and releasing resources for an old path. An MN(Mobile Node) periodically transmits a refresh message to a serving router at an old refresh interval(510). The refresh message is propagated to a CN(Correspondent Node) through an old path(512,514). The MN transmits data to the serving router by using the resources reserved through the refresh message(516). The data are delivered to the CN through the old path(518,520). If handoff occurs, the MN executes handoff procedures with a target router(526). At this moment, the MN adjusts the old refresh interval by using history information and transmits a refresh message, including information about the new refresh interval, to the target router(528). The refresh message is propagated to the CN through a new path(530,532). Afterwards, the MN periodically transmits a refresh message at the new refresh interval(534). The refresh message is delivered to the CN through the new path(536,538). The routers on the old path release the resources allocated to the old path at a state time-out interval established by the old refresh interval(540).
