PHOSWICH DETECTOR FOR SIMULTANEOUS DETECTION OF ALPHA AND BETA RAYS IN A PIPE

A phoswich detector for simultaneous detection of alpha and beta rays in pipes is provided to employ a cylindrical thin film ZnS(Ag) scintillator as an alpha ray detecting scintillator and a plastic scintillator as a beta ray detecting scintillator. A phoswich detector for simultaneously detect alpha and beta rays in pipes includes a cylindrical thin film ZnS(Ag) scintillator(10) for detecting alpha rays, and a plastic scintillator(11) aligned with a central axis of the cylindrical thin film ZnS(Ag) scintillator to detect beta rays. The thin film ZnS(Ag) scintillator includes a base polymer layer, and a ZnS(Ag) scintillator layer formed on the base polymer layer. A polymer material of the polymer layer is a polymer of polysulfone, styrene, and methylmethacrylate, or poly(bisphenol A). As an adhesive to bond the ZnS(Ag) scintillator layer to the polymer layer, cyanoethyl pulluan(CR-S), cyanoethyl polyvinylalcohol(CR-V) or mixed cyanoeresin of the same are used. The thickness of ZnS(Ag) scintillator layer ranges from 5 to 50 micrometers. The cylindrical thin film ZnS(Ag) scintillator further includes a supporting frame(18).
