An adaptive linear channel equalizer having an asymmetrical filter structure and an equalizing method thereof are provided to locate a main tap at a left end of a filter in setting a filter coefficient for removing precursor-ISI(Inter-Symbol Interference) and locate the main tap at a right end thereof in setting a filter coefficient for removing postcursor-ISI, thereby implementing a relatively expanded equalization range and effectively removing ISI without increase of operation quantity in a channel having long time delay. Equalization filters(121,122) have main taps whose positions are varied when filter coefficients for removing precursor-ISI and postcursor-ISI of an input signal including practical information are set on a basis of an inputted training sequence. A tap position control unit(130) controls the positions of the main taps. A filter coefficient storage unit(150) stores the filter coefficients outputted from the equalization filters. A signal output unit multiplies the input signal including the practical information by the filter coefficients stored in the filter coefficient storage unit, and thereby compensates distortion of the input signal.
