A track defect management method of an MC(Maintenance Cylinder) in a data storage system and a disk drive using the method are provided to process defective tracks as good tracks without processing the tracks as bad tracks if the generated number of track defects per head does not exceed the number of spare tracks included in an MC area even though the track defects are generated in the MC area, thereby increasing a process throughput. It is decided whether track defects are detected from an MC area of a disk(S310,S320). If so, track defect information is updated in an MC defect list(S330,S340). The accumulated number of the track defects per head, which is detected from the MC area, is compared with the total number of spare tracks included in the MC area(S350). If the accumulated number of the detected track defects exceeds the total number of the spare tracks, tracks are decided as bad tracks(S360).
