System and Associated Friction Stir WeldingFSW Assembly, and Controller for Performing a Friction Stir Welding Operation

The system, associated friction stir welding (FSW) assembly, controller and method for performing a friction stir welding operation are provided. The friction stir welding system includes a FSW device, such as a CNC machine, that includes an actuator capable of moving the FSW tool relative to the workpiece. The system also includes a controller that can control the FSW device to move the FSW tool to drive the actuator. In this regard, the actuators may be driven so that the FSW tool can perform a friction stir welding operation on the workpiece. The controller monitors the torque of the actuator, can control the FSW device to drive the actuator such that the torque is maintained within a range about the torque setting.
