A method for preparing an acrylic resin is provided to obtain an acrylic resin having excellent transparency as an optical resin, improved thermal stability, and allows easy control of molecular weight according to processing conditions of various molded articles. The method for preparing an acrylic resin comprises a step of carrying out suspension polymerization of a reaction mixture comprising (meth)acrylate monomers, an initiator, a dispersion stabilizer and a chain transfer agent. In the method, 0.1-0.5 parts by weight of a chain transfer agent containing n-octyl mercaptan and t-dodecyl mercaptan in a weight ratio of 0.1:0.9-0.9:0.1 is used per 100 parts by weight of a monomer mixture containing 90-100 parts by weight of methyl methacrylate and 0-10 wt% of alkyl acrylate. The acrylic resin has a decomposition temperature of 380-392 deg.C and a weight loss upon thermal decomposition of 6% or less.
