An RECD(RECord/blank area Detection) device of an optical disc and a detection method therefor are provided to enhance the judgment accuracy of a record/blank area irrespective of an external shape state of the disc, a recording state of data, a pickup state, or a kind of the disc by judging the record/blank area by using an RECD signal and a TE(Tracking Error) signal. An RECD signal generating unit(8) receives an RF(Radio Frequency) signal, and generates an RECD signal on the basis of the received RF signal. A DPD(Differential Phase Detection) TE signal generating unit(14) receives an electric signal, and generates a TE signal on the basis of the received electric signal. If the RECD signal indicates a blank area, a main control unit(22) compares a level of the TE signal with a predetermined value. If the level of the TE signal is greater than the predetermined value, the main control unit(22) judges a record/blank area as a record area. When the level of the TE signal is lower than the predetermined value, the main control unit(22) judges the record/blank area as the blank area.
