A gypsum material for reducing release of phosphorous from sediments of eutrophic lakes, which can reduce dissolution of sulfate according to the application of the gypsum material and can suppress the generation of methane at the same time by capping sediments in lakes using sand and gypsum granules prepared by adding ferric oxide(Fe2O3), and a method for preparing the gypsum material are provided. A method for reducing release of contaminants from a sediment(2) of an eutrophic lake comprises: capping a granule gypsum layer(4) with a predetermined thickness on the sediment of the eutrophic lake, prepared by granulating the mixture after mixing gypsum powder as an oxidizer with ferric oxide(Fe2O3). The method further comprises secondly capping a sand layer(6) with a predetermined thickness on the granule gypsum layer. The granule gypsum layer is prepared by mixing 100 weight parts of gypsum powder(CaSO4.2H2O) with 10 to 100 weight parts of ferric oxide(Fe2O3) for delaying the rate of release of sulfate ions from the gypsum powder, mixing 30 to 40 weight parts of water having room temperature with the mixture, kneading the mixture, drying the kneaded material at 100 to 105 deg.C for one hour, cutting the dried material to a predetermined size, granulating the cut material, and sintering the granulated gypsum at 550 deg.C.
