The bulkhead (18) is in the form of a plate and is held open at normal temperature to open the connection between two sections of a pipe system. At higher temperatures, the bulkhead moves vertically downwards and closes the connection between the two sections of the pipe system. At least one side of the bulkhead is coated with fireproofing (20) which foams under heat. The bulkhead is held in a gap (17) between two curved plates (14,16) and which is sealed all round by a sealing mass or hot-melt adhesive. The bulkhead is positioned at the join between a main (12) and a branch (13) pipe to which at least one fume-extractor hood is attached.
