Tangential discharge disk refiner for preparing pulp fibers in papermaking has two stationary disks and a single rotor on which are mounted opposed refiner disks
In the disk refiner, a rotor is mounted for axial movement to a spline which forms part of a drive shaft connected to a drive motor, the spline mounting facilitates hydrodynamic balance of the rotor between stationary disks. Twin disk refiner (20) comprises: (a) a housing (34) defining stock inlet and outlet; (b) a shaft (26) extending into the housing and supporting a rotor; (c) portions of the housing defining a plate support structure; (d) a fixed refiner disk mounted to the first support structure; (e) a second fixed refiner disk mounted to a second plate support structure; (f) a refining chamber within the housing; and (g) portions of the housing upstream of the refining chamber. Flow of stock from the inlet to the outlet defines downstream and upstream directions. Two rotating disks are mounted on the rotor so the first disk faces a direction opposite the direction faced by the second rotating disk. The rotor is positioned within the refining chamber, so rotation of the rotor moves the two rotating disks about the shaft. The first plate support structure has an upstream face exposed to and substantially surrounded by the upstream chamber, so fluid introduced in the housing at the inlet flows through the upstream side and into the refining chamber. The first plate structure is exposed to fluid pressure on its upstream face, countering fluid pressure applied to the first fixed refiner disk.
