The invention relates to the use of catalysts, which were previously prepared from transition metal complexes by treatment in a low-temperature plasma, for the cathodic reduction of oxygen in fuel cells. As a result of the low-temperature plasma treatment, the transition metal complexes are permanently supported on a suitable substrate and at the same time both the catalytic activity and the stability of the catalysts obtained in this way are increased.
