A high-pressure discharge lamp comprises a discharge tube and a hot-operated cathode rod. There is a reduction of gas space volume in the region of the cathode rod. Preferably the volume reduction is by reducing the internal diameter of the tube in the region of the cathode rod. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) A production process for the above; (B) A process to reduce the tube volume;and (C) A production process for a laser pumped lamp as above.
