The device has a reflector, an associated light source, a lens before the reflector in the light radiation direction, a screen mechanism between the light source and lens with a fixed screen for producing a high beam distribution and a switching screen (4) for producing a low beam distribution. The switching screen is pivotably mounted about an axis parallel to the optical axis on the fixed screen. The switching screen has a contoured edge surface forming a light-dark boundary formed by shaping a shaped part. The edge surface is essentially perpendicular to a base (7) of the switching screen.
