An assembly classifies medium and sized particulate waste by a combination of pneumatic and ballistic action, into light, medium and heavyweight particles. Following separation of fine particles the waste materials are accelerated over a full-width sieve suction drum (6) by a fast-moving belt. The rotating sieve drum bears profiles formed by external wipers and has an internal adjustable suction hood. The suction hood regulates the flow of air through the sieve drum. Air drawn through the sieve drum is discharged to a cyclone separator (Z). The partitions between adjacent traps can be shifted sideways as required.
