Diagnosing a catalyst arranged in the exhaust gas system of an internal combustion engine comprises measuring the oxygen storage capacity of a partial or total volume of the catalyst in the heating up phase of this volume and measuring the oxygen capacity of the partial or total volume of the catalyst in the heating up phase from the signal of a measuring probe arranged downstream of the catalyst volume. The partial or total volume of the catalyst is heated up to a defined time point in the heating up phase by adjusting a lean lambda value of the exhaust gas upstream of the catalyst. The time point is produced by a control unit of the engine. The oxygen storage capacity is measured by the reaction time depending on the temperature of the partial or total volume of the catalyst.
