Causing rotation of magnetic beads using superimposed magnetic alternating fields, e.g. for transfection of cultured cells, enzymatic destruction of thrombi, targeted drug release or special sensor formation
The use of superimposed magnetic alternating fields (SMAF's) is claimed in combination with magnetic (specifically ferromagnetic) beads (MB's) for transfection of cells in cultures, where DNA-coated nanobeads are used as transfection auxiliaries by inducing rolling motion. Independent claims are also included for: (1) apparatus for generating SMAF's in combination with MB's for destruction of thrombi, where nanobeads coated with thrombolytic enzymes are used to contact the enzyme with the fibrin of the thrombi and then set into rotating motion; (2) identifying, counting and selecting cells in cultures, by adding MB's bonded to antibodies to the culture, contacting the MB's with the cells, stimulating using SMAF's and quantifying the cells bonded to the antibodies; (3) apparatus for removing arteriosclerotic plaque from the interior walls of arteries, where MB's (or corresponding disks) are contacted with the plaque, then inducing rotational (and optionally also longitudinal movement) of the nanobeads using SMAF's; (4) SMAF generating apparatus, for stimulating MB's in combination with adapted shaped articles (e.g. nanotubes or porous zeolite structures) containing active agent, to cause rotational movement and targeted active agent release; (5) apparatus for pumping or opening and closing valves, in which MB's (or corresponding disks) are incorporated in adapted shaped articles (e.g. nanotubes) and implanted in the body, after which the nanobeads are stimulated with SMAF's to induce rotational (and optionally also longitudinal movement) and cause a pumping effect or open and close the nanotubes; (6) a corresponding method for pumping or opening and closing nano-scale pumps or valves; (7) constructing special surface structures or sensors using rotating magnetic particles or special coated nanoparticles in combination with SMAF's; and (8) MB's provided with a coating of DNA or thrombolytic enzymes.
