Process for avoiding the formation of bulking sludge in biological wastewater treatment plants

The invention relates to a method for reducing and avoiding the formation of expanded sludge in biological sewage treatment plants, in which a partial stream of the activated sludge is passed through a filter which contains compounds containing Ca and Mg. With the help of the process, the CaCO¶3¶ content of the activated sludge flake is increased in a targeted manner, thereby stabilizing its structure, while the free carbon dioxide in the system decreases. The process is simple, low-maintenance and economical to operate compared to the known processes.
