The method involves connecting a piezoelectric actuator of a fuel injection valve with a valve needle, and applying an electric voltage (U) at the actuator. An opening voltage (U r) is applied at the actuator for opening the injection valve. The voltage (U) between the two fuel injections is reduced to a residual voltage (U r), which is larger than a zero voltage and smaller than the opening voltage (U r). The voltage (U) is reduced after dropping of the injection cycle to zero voltage. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an injection system of an internal combustion engine with an injection valve (2) an internal combustion engine comprising an injection system with an injection valve.
