The supercharger has a two-stage drive (7) with gears, having variable gear transmission ratio, where the drive is integrated in the supercharger. The drive and the supercharger are enclosed by a common housing. The gear transmission ratio between the input and output of one gear is one and is larger than one in the latter gear. A magnetic clutch (16) is provided for switching between the gears corresponding to a specific strategy. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an internal combustion engine comprising a mechanical supercharger (2) a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
