The device has an optical device (5) measuring port-sided and starboard-sided angles (8, 9) between a sailing boat (1) that is movable in a longitudinal axis (11) of sailing boat and each buoy (2, 3) that is situated at a distance from both sides of the longitudinal axis. A distance measuring unit measures distance between the sailing boat and the buoys. A transmission unit transfers a value to an evaluation point. The buoys form a margin of a starting line (4) running at an angle to the axis. An independent claim is also included for a method of determining distance of an object from a straight line that runs in between two observable endpoints at an angle to an imaginary axis.
