The device has an adjusting unit (10) to adjust a firing angle depending on a knocking limit, and a determination unit (15) to determine a basic firing angle as precontrol value for the firing angle. A residual gas rate detecting unit (105) determines a residual gas rate in a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. A correcting unit (20) corrects the determined basic firing angle depending on the residual gas rate. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating an internal combustion engine.
