A switching device (1) has a system of main input and output contacts (2, 3) and contact bridges (4) and a drive system (6). The control device (13) for the switching device after receiving the switch command first detects a phase position of at least one of the load phases and/or switching voltage , then determines from this a time path for the governing state of the switch element (12) and finally sets this governing state corresponding to the determined time path which is specific to the phase position. An independent claim is included for a switching device with a control device detecting the phase position and setting the time path for the governing state. The drive system is designed as an electromagnetic drive system.
