The brushless DC motor has a spindle (10) and has a stator with a coil carrier (18) on a carrier ring (16) secured to a base. Supported on an air or roller bearing is a rotor (26). Set into the rotor are permanent magnets (28). Return plates (30,32) form two air gaps. Sensing coils (20) respond to motion.
