The system includes a recognition device (30) and several portable recognition units (20) for detecting passengers in a passenger transport means e.g. tourist bus (1). The recognition device has a recognition unit (31) that receives the outputs of the portable recognition units. A processor determines if the recognition unit of the recognition device is within the tourist bus or outside of the tourist bus. The portable recognition units are arranged with input and output sections (2) in the tourist bus. The portable recognition units are linked to the recognition device through wireless communication or contactless connection. The portable recognition units may be provided in the form of transponders or magnetic cards, while the recognition device may be provided in the form of a transponder reader or magnetic card reader.
