Charging device has a drive device (14') which has a planetary gear (14) with three planetary gear shafts. The first planetary gear shaft (17) is actively connected with rotor (16) of an electric machine (15) and the second planetary gear shaft (20) is actively connected with crankshaft (19) of the internal combustion engine (18). A free-wheel device locks the first planetary gear shaft if the electric machine is switched off. An independent claim is also included for the method for the operation of the charging device.
