u The refractometer (10) has a light source (30), a measuring prism (40) and a position sensitive detector (50). The device also has a beam splitter (80) which splits the light from the source into a sample beam (60) and a reference beam (70). Further optical components guide the beams in parallel to separate detection regions of the detector. The sample beam is guided out of the prism through the fluid sample and back into the prism. The reference beam is only reflected in the prism without coming into contact with the sample.
