A wire of oxide dispersion hardened alloy (I) based on platinum and/or palladium has an edge zone of the wire cross-section in which the relatively volatile oxide former(s) is diluted by at least 25%. An independent claim is included for the production of a wire of (I), in which (a) a porous skin is thermally created on the wire of (I) and (b) the porous skin is compressed by deformation to give a soft or impermeable skin.
