In applying a liquid to pasty coating medium (A) to a moving surface (5), using apparatus with delivery nozzle(s) (3) separated from the surface so that (A) falls onto the surface under gravity in the form of a curtain (4) from a height (H), (A) flows from the nozzles at an exit speed lower than the movement speed of the sheet and is heated or predried while falling from the nozzle(s) onto the sheet. An independent claim is included for corresponding coating apparatus, including delivery nozzle(s) (3) adapted to the width of the sheet (5) and at least one device (7) for heating or predrying (A) while falling from the nozzle(s) onto the sheet.
