The device has a camera (17) for recording an image of a coupling layer (13). The camera records areas with air pockets such that they are distinguishable from areas that do not have the air pockets in the coupling layer. An image reproduction unit represents the image recorded by the camera. A lamp (19) illuminates the coupling layer from inside or from outside of the coupling bellows (5), where the bellows is partially transparent to the frequency range of the lamp. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for determining the coupling quality of a coupling bellow on a patient (2) a method for determining the coupling quality of a coupling bellow on a patient.
