The method involves providing a set of separate partial calenders (2, 3) and subjecting a sheet of fibrous material (1) with pressure and increased temperature. The sheet of fibrous material is cooled between the partial calenders. A side of the sheet of fibrous material is made stronger and another side of the sheet of the fibrous material is smoothened. The sheet of the fibrous material is moisturized after cooling. An independent claim is also included for a calender for treating a paper, cardboard, or other sheet of fibrous material.
