A butterfly valve (2) in a suction line (1) is turned to closed or opened positions when the detected valve temperature is above or under a given temperature, at time of engine stop. A spring-biased locking piston (13) with pointed tip engages the notch of the butterfly valve, keeping the valve completely closed. A mounting plate (9), supported relative to the valve via spring (8), resists the locking action to force the valve into a freeze protection position. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling hydrocarbon emissions from air suction line of IC engine.
