The method involves winding up a steel profile tape (3) in a spiral form, around a shell-shaped roller base (4). The profile tape is provided before winding with an upper surface structure. Residual stress of the profile tape is adjusted or controlled before winding up of the profile tape. The profile tape is coated with a chromium-nickel alloy such that the upper surface structure is formed with a layer. The upper surface is provided in the form of a film layer. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a roller for a paper machine (2) a device for executing a method for manufacturing a roller for a paper machine.
