The method involves having a multi-wavelength source or a tunable source and imaging on a receiver by focusing systems. Chromatic depth resolution is achieved in the focusing system by a diffractive optical zone lens and a spectral analysis is carried out by a dispersive spectrometer. The interfering electromagnetic radiation is detected by a wavelength determination and the z-position of the object details determined from the spectrum such as with FFT from the knowledge of the depth resolution in the chromatic confocal system and the refractive index. An independent claim is included for an arrangement.
