Production of globular or tubular synthetic membranes from self-organizing film-forming molecules, especially lipids, comprises feeding the molecules in layers from two sides into an aqueous solution. The molecules are fed into a microporous intermediate layer (4) which separates two channels (2, 3) in a microchip (1). The channels are then filled with aqueous solution and a pressure difference set up between them. An independent claim is included for apparatus for carrying out the process which comprises a microchip as described.
