The method involves determining an ambient temperature (tumV) from an inlet air temperature of an air flow through a suction pipe of an internal combustion engine. The temperature change of the air flow in the suction pipe is determined by characteristic curves (54, 78, 88) during the determination of the ambient temperature. The efficiency of an intercooler (32) in the engine depends on the vehicle speed and the air mass flow, which flows via the suction pipe. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program for application in a method for operating an internal combustion engine (2) an electrical storage device for a control-and/or regulating device of an internal combustion engine (3) a control-and/or regulating device for an internal combustion engine.
