The method involves operating an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle in a no-load running operation. Values for rough running of the internal combustion engine are measured. The determined values are compared with values of predetermined engine characteristic. A determination is made to find whether a charge-motion valves-function lies in an OK-area, where corresponding compensation measures are initiated. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for no-load running-function diagnosis of a charge-motion valve in an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle (2) a computer program with program code units to implement a method of no-load running-function diagnosis of a charge-motion valve in an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, when a program is executed in a computer (3) a computer program product with program code units that are stored in a computer readable storage medium to implement a method of no-load running-function diagnosis of a charge-motion valve in an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle when the program product is executed in a computer.
