Production of analyte ions from analyte molecules comprises desorbing the analyte molecules in an ambient gas at a pressure of 10-1000 Pa, producing reactant ions in a reactant ion source, feeding the reactant ions through an ion-conducting system of a desorption cell and ionizing the desorbed analyte molecules by the reactant ions. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Ion source for ionizing analyte molecules; and (2) Spectrometer containing the above ion source.
